School Admissions

As the St. Aubyn’s School Admissions Registrar, it is a pleasure to meet parents and their children to show them around the School and to help them settle into their education at St. Aubyn’s.

The main points of entry to the School are the Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) and at ages 7+ (Year 3), with entry at other ages dependent upon vacancies occurring.

Interested in seeing the school in action? We welcome families for personal tours and Open Days.

NURSERY

Entry to Nursery is by the date of registration, therefore registrations should be made as soon as possible after birth.

60 children (30 girls and 30 boys) are admitted to the Nursery every September.

Offers are made in late September of the year preceding entry.

All prospective parents are invited to visit the School either before or after registration. Offers will not be made unless parents have visited the School and met the Head.

RECEPTION (4+)

We have a small number of places in Reception every year. Registered applicants will be invited to attend an informal assessment within the School setting.

The 4+ assessment day also presents the opportunity for you as parents and guardians to gain a deeper sense of the experiences we offer to our youngest learners. You’ll see first-hand why the ISI Inspection (May 2025) recognised St. Aubyn’s Early Years provision as a ‘significant strength’. All event details are sent once your child is invited to the assessment.

Understand the 4+ assessment

The assessments are age-appropriate and designed to identify applicants who are able to benefit from our balanced and well-rounded curriculum and who will make a positive contribution towards the life of the School, including positive social interaction with their peers. Children entering Reception will be expected to integrate successfully with the current cohort, both emotionally and socially, and to demonstrate excellent behaviour.

Applicants who are assessed and do not meet the required behavioural, social and emotional standards can stay on the waiting list for possible entry into Year 1 and beyond.

It is also advisable to register early for entry to older age groups. Entry at this stage is by selective process.

7+ ENTRY (YEAR 3)

Registered applicants for 7+ entry (Year 3) are invited to attend an assessment morning, designed to assess academic potential in a supportive and structured environment.

The 7+ Entrance Assessment for September 2026 entry will take place on Friday 27 February at 9.00am.

The assessment is the CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test), a nationally recognised test that looks at how children think and learn rather than what they already know. It measures four key reasoning skills:

  • Verbal – understanding and using language
  • Non-Verbal – solving visual problems
  • Quantitative – working with numbers
  • Spatial – visualising and manipulating shapes.

The School also offers a limited number of bursary-assisted places to eligible applicants entering at 7+.

The online registration form is available below. A non-refundable registration fee of £120 is payable upon registration. A further deposit of £600 is payable when a firm place is accepted and is returned when your child leaves the School, provided they remain until the end of Year 6.
