Our history
It was originally sited opposite Bancroft’s School and in 1893 moved to premises on the site of the present Hawkey Hall. In 1919 the school was relocated to its current site in Bunces Lane, with a temporary relocation to Cumberland during the Second World War.
In 1922, Colonel W H Colley took over the School and in 1951 his son, Mr H H Colley, joined the staff. Mr Harold Colley took over as Headmaster in 1967 and in 1975 the School became a registered charity, St. Aubyn’s, Woodford Green, School Trust. Mr Harold Colley retired in 1993 and was succeeded by Headmaster, Mr Gordon James MA (Oxon) in whose time the School doubled in size and saw the introduction of girls. Mr James retired in 2013 to be succeeded by Mr Leonard Blom. During this time, the School benefitted from significant developmental changes: a new Dining Hall, Nursery building, extension to the Performing Arts Centre, Reception conservatory to name but a few. It also went from strength to strength in its academic achievements.

Mr Blom retired in 2023, with his successor being Mr Taylor.
A more detailed account of the School’s history can be found below. This was written by former pupil and school archivist, Nicholas Dixon. I am honoured to serve as the Chair of Governors at St. Aubyn’s School, a role that allows me to contribute to the continued success of this outstanding institution. St. Aubyn’s (Woodford Green) School Trust is a registered charity, ensuring that all income is reinvested into providing the best possible educational experience for our pupils. As Governors, we are committed to maintaining a well-staffed school with excellent resources, modern facilities, and optimal class sizes, ensuring a balanced and enriching education for every child.
Having been a resident of South Woodford since childhood, I have a deep-rooted connection to the local community. I attended a small independent primary school, followed by a state grammar school, before going on to study Law at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London. I have since built a successful career as a solicitor, founding and running a practice in London’s West End.
My personal connection to St. Aubyn’s runs deep—both of my children attended the school from Nursery. Thanks to the exceptional education they received, they both successfully gained admission to the local selective independent schools. I firmly believe in the value of private education and the unique opportunities that St. Aubyn’s provides. Having served as a Governor since 2018, I remain dedicated to supporting the school in delivering excellence, ensuring that every pupil benefits from the best possible start to their educational journey.
I can be contacted either by telephoning the Clerk to the Governors on 0208 504 1577 or email: bursar@staubyns.com.
