The rhythm of school life is carefully designed to balance academic focus, physical activity, creative expression, pastoral care and social development – giving children the structure they need to thrive and the variety they need to stay engaged.
Every day looks a little different depending on the year group, the season and the activities on offer. But certain things remain constant: high expectations, warm relationships, time outdoors, and the feeling that every child is known and valued. One of the best ways to understand St. Aubyn’s is to see how a typical day unfolds.
Families with children in Nursery – Year 2 who need an early start can use before-school care from 7:30am. Supervised by school staff, children enjoy a light breakfast (cereal, toast and milk until 8:30am) and settle into the day with drawing, construction, jigsaws and small-world play. The cost is £6.50 per session.
Each morning, pupils can purchase breakfast from the school Dining Hall, and enjoy time with parents and guardians, setting them up ready for their day ahead.
The school day begins with registration and moves into the morning’s core academic lessons. Mornings for our younger years are typically dedicated to English, mathematics and other core subjects. Specialist teaching in sports, music and languages is amalgamated into the timetable for all year groups. More subject specialist lessons are introduced in Year 1, 2, and 3.
In Early Years and Pre-Prep, mornings blend structured literacy and numeracy with exploratory, play-based learning – carefully guided to build the foundations for the more formal curriculum ahead.
Pupils head outdoors for break, using the playgrounds, fields and outdoor spaces. Physical activity and fresh air are built into the daily routine.
Lunch is served in the Dining Hall, followed by free time or supervised activities. Lunchtime clubs, playground games and time in the outdoor wellbeing spaces give children a chance to recharge socially and physically before the afternoon.
Afternoons are devoted to core subjects and specialist teaching-science, humanities, languages, computing, art, DT, music, drama, dance and PE. These sessions bring variety and creative energy to the second half of the day.
The formal school day ends at 3:15pm for EYFS, 3:30pm for Years 1 and 2, and 4:00pm for Prep. For many pupils, this is when co-curricular activities begin – sport, music, drama, coding, chess, cooking and more. With 40+ weekly options, there is something for every interest – pupils’ activities take place until 5pm.
After-school wraparound care is available for all pupils until 6pm, managed by a dedicated team. Children receive a light tea (sandwiches and fruit, varied regularly), enjoy creative projects, outdoor play and gardening in summer. A 40-minute supervised homework session is available for Prep pupils (Years 3-6).
The cost is £13 per session for Years 1-6, or £15 for EYFS pupils. Booking is via ParentPay, and childcare vouchers and tax-free childcare are accepted.
